As an ovarian cancer thriver, Sara has a sense of gratitude, strength, and perspective that she extends to family, friends, work, and her writing. Ellen cofounded The Emily Shane Foundation, a nonprofit charity to honor the memory of her beloved daughter Emily, following her tragic murder at the age of 13 in April, 2010. The foundation is based on promoting kindness and good deeds and its flagship educational initiative provides disadvantaged, struggling middle school students who risk failure a pathway to success through intensive academic and mentorship via its Successful Educational Achievement (SEA) Program.
