As an ovarian cancer thriver, Sara has a sense of gratitude, strength, and perspective that she extends to family, friends, work, and her writing. On her journey from science to writing, she says “Let go of who you are and become what you might be. Do what scares you.”

Deborah Zara Kobylt talks with Ellen Shane. She is a dog lover, wife, mother, public speaker, author, co-founder and Executive Director of the Emily Shane Foundation. Ellen cofounded The Emily Shane Foundation, a nonprofit charity to honor the memory of her beloved daughter Emily, following her tragic murder at the age of 13 in April, 2010. The foundation is based on promoting kindness and good deeds and its flagship educational initiative provides disadvantaged, struggling middle school students who risk failure a pathway to success through intensive academic and mentorship via its Successful Educational Achievement (SEA) Program.
